A study by the University of Colorado Denver suggests that posting too many useless updates on Facebook is the top reason why Facebook users remove friends. This study is important for businesses who utilize social media marketing; if people will unfriend* a person they know for too many useless posts it can be assumed that a business page will be deleted just as fast.
Getting people to subscribe to your Facebook page is difficult enough, but keeping them as subscribers is an impressive tight rope walk. On the one hand, a business does not want to be overlooked by the constant status updates and in turn getting no Facebook traffic. On the other hand, a business does not want to over saturate its follower’s pages with every little piece of company news. In order to maximally affective, a business page must be able to reach a happy medium between not only the quantity of their posts but the quality as well.
This study by UC Denver study further stresses the point that businesses must take social media marketing seriously. Admittedly I am not a social media marketing expert, in fact I am a novice, though it is clear to me that in order to benefit from social media there is a lot of research to be done by businesses. At the end of the article the students who conducted this study at UC Denver hinted at researching the relationship between businesses and individual users on Facebook, which is a study with results I would like to see.
Knowing that Facebook users will unfriend someone for too many useless posts, how does this affect your approach to Facebook?
